Winter Skin Care

Dry, itchy skin?

During the winter months, dry skin becomes more prevalent due to indoor heating and weather changes such as low humidity.

Dry skin may be flaky, itchy or dull in appearance. Fine lines may be more pronounced. If left alone, dry skin can worsen and crack or bleed, making it more susceptible to infection.

Keeping your skin well-moisturized is key in maintaining healthy skin. Contemporary Dermatology shares these winter skin care tips:

Cleanse your skin each day with a gentle fragrance-free cleanser and warm water.

Apply moisturizer to your body immediately after washing and drying to lock in moisture. Opt for non-comedogenic products that contain one or more moisturizing ingredients such as shea butter, ceramides or hyaluronic acid.

Take care to limit your UVA/UVB exposure. During the winter months, continue to wear a broad-spectrum SPF 50 sunscreen for outdoor activities. Even on the ski slopes, sunscreen will protect you from the sun’s harmful rays reflected back by the snow.

Stay hydrated. Drink at least 8 cups of water daily. It’s good for your skin and contributes to your skin’s elasticity.
