ABOUT MELANOMA AND NON-MELANOMA SKIN CANCER
Skin cancers are abnormal growths that can appear on the skin. Anyone who has spent time in the sun or in tanning beds has a chance of developing skin cancer in their lifetime. Actinic keratoses (AK): This type will typically form after the age of 40 years and around areas of the skin that have been exposed to the sun — like the head, neck, hands, and arms. AKs appear as dry, scaly areas and are generally deemed precancerous.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC): This is the most common type of cancer. BCC can develop anywhere on the body and may appear as a pink, flesh-colored, or pearl-like bump.
Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC): This is the second most common type of skin cancer. Forming on skin that gets the most sun exposure, SCC appears as scaly patches; red, firm bumps; and/or sores that frequently reopen.
Melanoma: Melanoma often begins as a dark growth or as a sudden change to an existing mole. Dr. Nossa uses the ABCDs to identify melanoma — asymmetry, border, color, and diameter. Since melanoma has the potential to spread to other parts of the body, it should be treated promptly.

HOW IS SKIN CANCER TREATED?
A detailed skin evaluation will be conducted to examine the mole or lesion and determine whether further treatment is needed. Dr. Nossa may perform a biopsy, which involves taking a small sample of tissue from the suspected spot. Typically, the growth can be removed at the same time as the biopsy. We utilize the following skin cancer removal methods in our Marstons Mills, MA office:
Cryosurgery: Liquid nitrogen is sprayed directly onto the skin to freeze and destroy the cancerous cells. The treatment is quick and only involves mild discomfort. Afterward, the skin will form a blister or scab, which will fall off naturally within the next couple of weeks.
Standard excisional surgery: After topical anesthesia is applied to the treatment area, Dr. Nossa will use a scalpel to cut away the abnormal tissue along with a small amount of healthy tissue. The tissue is then sent to the pathology lab for further testing. Small excisions can be sewn closed while bigger excisions may necessitate a skin graft to close up the wound.
Your specific treatment will be personalized based on the location, size, and type of skin cancer you have. Dr. Nossa will do everything he can to fully eradicate cancer and avoid scarring.

How can I prevent skin cancer?
Many forms of skin cancer are caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. To prevent skin cancer, Contemporary Dermatology recommends avoiding sun exposure and wearing sunscreen when spending time outdoors. Patients should also attend regular skin cancer screenings with a dermatologist, especially if they have been diagnosed with a form of skin cancer before.
Will I have scars after skin cancer removal?
Skin cancer removal can leave scars, but Dr. Nossa and our team work hard to only remove the affected area and leave behind as much healthy tissue as possible. Our office can also provide you with at-home tips and advice for minimizing scarring. As always, avoid sun exposure on the area, as this will only worsen the appearance of your scars.
