August is Hair Loss Awareness Month
Hair loss is an epidemic of concern for both men and women. It is a physical and emotional process that can devastate someone’s self-confidence and wreak havoc on their social participation.
Hair loss, otherwise known as alopecia, is one of the most common disorders diagnosed and treated by dermatologists. Hair may fall out gradually or suddenly. Hair loss may be attributed to a number of factors including tightly-pulled hairstyles, nutrition, aging, genetics, hormones, stress and illness.
In the hair growth cycle, it is normal to lose some hair each day as it is replaced by new hair growing in. However, if you’ve noticed that your hair is thinning or you have a bald spot or receding hairline, it’s important to see a board-certified dermatologist who will get to the root of the problem quickly.
