Skin Care Awareness Month

6 Key Tips for Maintaining Healthy Skin

September is Skin Care Awareness Month. Did you know that the skin is the largest organ in the body? Its job is to protect the body from germs, temperature and chemicals. The skin is also a good indicator of a person’s overall health. Here are a few skin care tips:

Stay hydrated. Some might think that because the intense heat of summer has passed, there’s no need to be concerned about drinking enough fluids to avoid dehydration. However, your skin requires H2O. Hydrated skin is less dry and has more elasticity. Drinking at least 8 cups of water daily, year-round, benefits both your skin and body.

Get your “beauty sleep”. Did you know that the skin regenerates while we sleep? Sleep improves blood flow to the skin and also supports collagen production. Not getting enough sleep is actually noticeable as skin will be duller, drier and those with eczema and rosacea may experience flare-ups. How much sleep is enough? Around 7-9 hours of sleep is recommended.

Nourish your skin. Your daily diet really does play a role in skincare. Fruits and vegetables contain antioxidants that neutralize free radicals and benefit the skin. For example, avocado contains nourishing vitamin E and C. Other beneficial fruits and vegetables include citrus fruits, tomato, watermelon, carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach and bell peppers. Foods such as almonds and walnuts which contain omega-3s (essential fatty acids) are good for your skin too.

Pamper your skin by using a gentle cleanser and moisturizer as part of your morning and evening skincare routine each day.

Wear sunscreen year-round to protect your skin from the sun and reduce your risk of skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Look for sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and an SPF of 30 or higher.

Check your skin for changing moles and other signs of skin cancer. Be proactive and schedule an annual check-up with your dermatologist.
